Ya v Sorochtsi Narodylas was a short solo project for a university assignment. It is primarily conceptual but I made a prototype in Unity showcasing the main mechanics of the game. This was a very personal project because the war in Ukraine has been drastically, directly affecting my life. Thus, I decided to make a game that parallels to someone whose life is being turned upside down. I used an experimental approach wherein you take photos of certain objects that act as story points and the protagonist has short monologues that give context to the world around her. Via the viewfinder you see how everything looked before the war and that is the key to how you navigate. The current reality, however, is distorted and barely navigable due to the protagonist's mental state. You must use the vision your camera gives you to reach your destinations, all whilst avoiding encounters with enemy soldiers by sneaking past them.

During the russo-Ukrainian war of 2022, Mariupol, a large port city at the East of Ukraine, is under brutal russian occupation. There is not a single building in the entire city left unscathed. A local young teenage girl named Nadiya (Hope) is keen on making her way out of her hometown which is now enveloped in danger, with a specific goal: documenting and showing the world what is happening to her and millions of others' homes at this time. With truth and unfaltering hope for a better tomorrow driving her forward, she perseveres on her terrifyingly courageous journey.

The title of the game directly translates to "I was born in a shirt." This refers to the Ukrainian idiom "being born in a shirt" which refers to someone lucky who overcame/survived a terrible calamity or disease. The term is used both literally and figuratively in the game: the protagonist wears a traditional Ukrainian vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt) and is also a war survivor.

The following diagrams revolve around the narrative structure of the game, including story progression, dramatic tension, and beats. The last page showcases sketches of annotated maps for the prototype's level layout, including interest points that would serve as one of the guides for reaching the endpoint.
